Protecting kids on and off the field

Dayton Children’s new mommy safety blogger, Jessica Saunders

In previous postings I’ve mentioned that I’m the coordinator for Safe Kids Greater Dayton, a local organization dedicated to preventing unintentional childhood injuries.  We are part of the larger Safe Kids Worldwide network and this week across the country we are celebrating Sports Safety Week!

Although Mary Louise is years away from playing  a sport, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind all of those soccer moms, basketball moms and even the hockey moms out there the importance of sports safety – particularly as it relates to concussions, acute and overuse injuries and heat stroke.

Currently, sports injuries are the leading cause of visits to the Soin Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Room for kids in their pre-teen years.  Safe Kids Greater Dayton and Dayton Children’s are dedicated to preventing these injuries which can sometimes have life-long effects.  Take a few minutes to review some of the tips from Safe Kids USA!

Let’s do all we can to keep kids safe and on the field!
