A couple months ago I wrote about one of my concerns as a new mother – how my first baby, Bella, would react to our new baby. And hopefully you will remember that Bella is our 3-year-old golden retriever.
In the last entry I wrote about some of the techniques that we planned to use with Bella in order to prepare her for our new family member. We walked around with our stuffed bear, Nixon, to let Bella see us paying attention to something new. We also planned (and did) bring home a receiving blanket with Mary’s smell for Bella to sniff before we came home.
I have to admit – the interaction between Bella and the new baby was something that weighed on my mind a lot!
I’m happy to say – Bella has been phenomenal with Mary! The day we came home she was a changed dog – I believe she had a “sixth” sense. Bella will come and sniff Mary – maybe give the occasional kiss – and then go about her business of chasing her tail, chewing on her bone or foraging for socks. She has shown an overly protective side just yet and is fine with my husband and me paying more attention to the baby.
Bella was really sweet a day or two after we brought the baby home when I handed the baby off to my husband to take a phone call. Bella followed me into our room, jumped on the bed with me and just laid her head in my lap as to say -”Now that you don’t have that baby in your arms, could you please give me a little love!”
Overall – we are elated with both of our girls! Of course – I would never leave Mary alone with Bella but these first few weeks have been great and we’re looking forward to a great, and safe, friendship between Mary and Bella.
