meet Doc McCrane!

Special thanks to the nearly 600 employees, patients and families who voted to name our 200-foot-friend in the center of campus!

We are excited to introduce you officially to “Doc McCrane.”

The name Doc McCrane was submitted by Abbey Gordon, RN, who is a PACU nurse in perioperative services.

We sat down with Abbey to learn more about how she came up with the winning name and how she works to make a difference at Dayton Children’s every day.

How long have you been at Dayton Children’s and in what role(s)? I have been a part of Dayton Children’s since I was young, I grew up in Springfield and this was my children’s hospital. I broke bones many different times (four to be exact!) and Jim Lehner, MD, was my doctor more than once! While attending Cedarville University, I had the opportunity to do my pediatric rotation here at Dayton Children’s. Then in August 2014 there was an open position in the PACU. Dayton Children’s feels like home to me.

How did you come up with the name ‘Doc McCrane’ and what appealed to you about the name? I was excited to have the chance to participate in the naming of the crane! Doc McCrane just seemed so appropriate to name our crane. I like that the name represents the cartoon for the kids and doctors for the staff. When I think about the crane, I imagine Doc McCrane working all day in his own operating room finishing his cases for the day. I am thrilled that Doc McCrane was picked!

What aspects of the new patient tower are you the most excited about and why?The technology advances the new tower has to offer to patients and families is what I am most excited about. It will be state-of-the-art and will give the staff and patients more space and flexibility. I can’t wait for when the tower opens!

Nearly 600 people voted for a crane name and yours won, how did that make you feel? I was thrilled that my name made the top five and I was surprised to find out that I won because all top five names were creative.

How do you make a difference for kids at Dayton Children’s every day? I make a difference here at Dayton Children’s with my positive attitude. Each day is another day to impact a child, their family and my coworkers. I believe the best thing you can do for a child is to make them smile and laugh… this takes some of the nerves away about having surgery. Also, my goal is to always comfort the family afterwards. Dayton Children’s makes a difference every day in the lives of so many children and I am blessed and honored to be a part of it.

Is there anything else that you would like to add? I would like to give a shout out to my PACU crew and thank them for all they do each day to make it work!
