There are so many options it seems for trick or treating options, door-to-door in a neighborhood, at community centers, and even at area churches. Don’t forget Kings Island or some festivals. The bigger problem with all of these events is regulating the volume of sugar and junk food that your child will accumulate! (We have already established a limit of 1 piece/type of junk food/ candy/ dessert or treat per day here in our household, so we just continue that into Halloween season.)
This year we will be walking around our neighborhood and here are our safety tips:
1.) Wear a visible costume with either reflective options, reflective tape on the bag, and/or a flashlight.
2.) Stay on the sidewalks and cross only where marked and appropriate. Use well-lit streets. If there is no side walk and you must walk on the road, walk facing traffic /into the flow of traffic to improve your visibility.
3.) Only approach well lit houses. Never enter a house unless it is someone trusted and known.
4.) Children under the age of 12 years should be accompanied by an adult.
5.) Make a plan with your child if you become lost or separated. Where to go, where to meet, who to contact. Now is a good time to teach your child about 911 (or other local emergency number if applicable) and also to remind them that police officers can help them should they become lost.
6.) Remind your children to not eat anything until you have had a chance to inspect it.
7.) This is also a good time to practice good manners; saying please and thank you, walking politely on the sidewalk and not walking into people’s yards, taking only one piece and not being greedy, and of course sharing – with younger or older siblings and parents tooJ
8.) This is a good time to remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Some dentist offices offer to exchange the candy obtained as well.
