Get your plate in shape

Looking ahead in March we celebrate Spring with warm weather and enjoying the outdoors. March is also the celebration of National Nutrition Month.  Each year, National Nutrition Month provides us the opportunity to remind everyone of the basics of healthy eating.

The American Dietetic Association now known as “The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics” encourages everyone to include healthy foods from all food groups.

This name change was effective January 2012 and promotes the strong science background and academic expertise of registered dietitians.

The Academy celebrates registered dietitians as the food and nutrition experts and March 14th is Registered Dietitian Day.

This year’s theme is “Get Your Plate in Shape” and the focus of this year’s theme is the new “MyPlate” to help everyone “make the simple changes to their daily eating plans”  and develop sound eating and physical activity habits. These guidelines are based on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines.

 Remember these important tips for Healthy Eating:

  •   Make half your plate fruits and vegetables
  •   Make at least half your grains whole grain
  •   Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk
  •   Vary your protein choices
  •   Cut back on sodium and empty calories from solid fats and sugars
